Bill Bruford, Barriemore Barlow BJ Wilson, Carl Palmer, Phil Collins versus newer prog stylists like Neil Peart followed by Gavin Harrison, Pat Mestelloto, Ian Mosley, Paul Cook and such.
Interesting post. Tough to call because I'm tending to include Neil in the first group since he joined Rush in '74 and including Mike Portnoy, Scott Rockenfield, and (mid 90's) Paul Craddick in the second group.
I think leaving the list just like it is I'd pick... both. And adjusting the list as noted above I'd pick... both!
Ahhhh!!! the neutral type...:) It is true that both lists are very deadly in the perscussive end. I certainly concur that it was even difficult to decide who to mention on the mentionned above. In the end though, prog drummers have so much freedom in their approach musically that styles and techniques are so abundant and notably awesome. Thanks for your comment Epic!!
While I can (sometimes) dance in 13/8, marching to a similar beat just may kill me. :)
I confess to not keeping up with newer music, though I do know many of the names on both lists. If I stick with what I've heard most, I'd have to go with the first gen names.
Because of my age, I tend to have a soft spot for the classic drummers but with new technology and advanced techniques these days....I must confess...I'm impressed by many...
